The 8mm video format refers to three related video cassette formats. These are the original Video8 (analogue recording) format and its improved successor Hi8 (analogue video and analogue audio but with provision for digital audio), as well as a more recent digital recording format known as Digital8.
The three formats are physically very similar, featuring both the same magnetic tape width and near-identical cassette shells, measuring 95mm × 62.5mm × 15mm.
However the 3 formats are very different in terms of quality, in particular Digital 8.
